Artificial preservatives

BENZOIC ACID

Can become carcinogenic when mixed with vitamin C.

BUTYLATED HYDROXYANISOLE AND HYDROXYTOLUENE

Can build up in the lungs, liver, and kidneys and have been linked to stomach tumours in animal studies.

PROPYL GALLATE

Can cause asthmatic reactions and stomach irritation.

SODIUM BENZOATE

Can become carcinogenic when mixed with vitamin C in large amounts.

SULFITES (potassium bisulfite, sodium sulfite)

Can induce asthma in sulfite-sensitive populations.

Artificial sweeteners and flavours

ACESULFAME POTASSIUM

Linked to high blood sugar.

ASPARTAME

Linked to high blood sugar.

GLYCOLS (propylene glycol)

Can be used as a solvent, preservative, or sweetener. Can be toxic to the kidneys, liver, and nervous system.

HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP

Linked to fatty liver, obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and inflammation.

SACCHARIN

Can cause allergic reactions.

SUCRALOSE

Associated with a decrease in important gastrointestinal (GI) flora as well as bowel inflammation.

XYLITOL AND ERYTHRITOL

Sugar alcohols used as sweeteners that can cause diarrhoea, gas, and bloating.

SYNTHETIC VANILLIN

Used in imitation vanilla flavouring and usually manufactured from petrochemicals or genetically modified yeast. Known to trigger allergic reactions, GI upset, and migraines.

Allergens

EGGS, FISH AND SHELLFISH, MILK, NUT-DERIVED INGREDIENTS, SOYBEANS, WHEAT, GLUTEN

These common allergens can cause allergic reactions and discomfort, and in some cases even anaphylaxis.

Synthetic colours

CARMINE (cochineal, natural red 4)

A red dye made from insects that can cause allergic reactions.

FEDERAL FOOD, DRUG, AND COSMETIC ACT (FD&C) NUMBERED PIGMENTS

Artificial colours and dyes have in some cases been linked to illness and allergies. FD&C numbered pigments also frequently contain aluminum.

TITANIUM DIOXIDE

A metallic colourant classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as possibly carcinogenic.

Others

BISPHENOL A (BPA)

A plasticizer used in plastic containers that mimics estrogen in the body. Can disrupt thyroid hormones, causing infertility, miscarriage, or erectile dysfunction. Can also adversely influence fetal development and increase cancer risk.

DICALCIUM PHOSPHATE

A combination of calcium and phosphorus used as a filler and bulking agent, often to make forming tablets easier.

GMOs

Genetically modified organisms.

GELATIN

Often made from animal products.

MICROCRYSTALLINE CELLULOSE

Refined wood pulp used as filler in some capsules or tablets.

POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL

A coating used to make tablets easier to swallow but often contaminated with synthetic substances such as dioxane and ethylene oxide.

STEARATES (stearic acid, magnesium stearate)

Manufacturing aids that allow more ingredients to be packed into a capsule. Stearates can inhibit the absorption of nutrients and make supplements less bioavailable.

TALC

A mined mineral, talc carries the risk of being contaminated with asbestos, veins of which frequently occur in talc deposits.

TRANS-FATS (hydrogenated oils)

Because trans-fats are associated with heart disease, stroke, diabetes and inflammation, the US Food and Drug Administration removed them from its Generally Recognized As Safe list in 2015.

HYDROXYPROPYL METHYLCELLULOSE

Many supplement companies use hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, or HPMC, capsules to deliver their products. The HPMC manufacturing process involves the synthetic alteration of cellulose. During its production, various highly reactive, toxic substances, such as chloromethane and carcinogenic propylene oxide, are used and must be removed and disposed of.
